Ni-Bthaska-Ke Trail Run - 4/3/2010

Two sore to walk, too young to crawl. The first is me; and the second is Taia (8mos) - still no crawling yet, just some all-fours, rocking and "air humping".

The reason I can't walk is an accumulation of running the most challenging trail run in all of Nebraska and then chasing that the next morning with a 20-miler. I could feel my butt burning off during the steep, ravine, uphills, and my quads are screaming from trying to maintain a 8:00/mile pace for the first 18 of 20 miles. Milo came to the rescue as my substitute running partner for the last 2, and we slowed it down to a 12-yr old (84-dog-yrs) Jack Russell Terrier pace, which at that time was still quite torturous.

I told Rodney that the pain I feel today, is comparable to the pain after I felt after running our first (only marathon), but that since giving birth, my Scale of Pain has been reorganized. The trail run was the most insane thing I've done next to childbirth, and even a little more unexpectedly difficult. For my huffing, puffing, climbing, sweat, dirt, endurance, I finished in about 1hr 25min, which would be very slow for a road race, being that I was in Zone 5 for over 85% of the time.

There were a few times that I thought I was under cardiac arrest, a couple times where I yelled aloud, "Fuck!" or "Are you kidding?" (likely when I climbed and climbed and expected a downhill, but just got another incredible climb), and one time where I was literally hugging a tree because I had to stop and hang on for dear life. It was hard, it hurt, and it was so worth it. Rodney likes my prize: a super heavy, 12" pre-seasoned, Cabela's cast iron skillet. Tough challenges like that are so personally rewarding. I'd love to run it again, and maybe skip the long run the next day.

Until my pain subsides, Taia and I will just flop around on the floor with her toys.
